DOWNLOAD: Crocodiles – Endless Flowers – RCRD LBL
May 17th, 2012DOWNLOAD: Crocodiles – Endless Flowers
Sometimes my dad will go on about how there aren’t real band names any more. I guess sometimes his wooden box of hippy-dippy beads (his words) speaks to him from the attic. Moby Grape, it says. Strawberry Alarm Clock, it persists. Crocodiles, I argue back. This good naming even extends to their tracks. “Endless Flowers” invokes the good of love-child days while sounding immensely 2012. A brash thumper with an escapist melody and the title track for their upcoming album of the same name. It’s out June 5 on Frenchkiss, Dad. Check it out.

Choose the Right Flowers for Mother's Day
May 12th, 2012
If you’re stopping by the florist or grocery store to pick up some flowers for a mom in your life today, why not take a few extra minutes to choose flowers that can truly convey your emotions? In Victorian times, a whole “Language of Flowers” was developed, and bouquets became complicated messages that a recipient would decipher using a book like Kate Greenaway’s (click to see). Though this practice isn’t used as widely today, Mother’s Day seems like the perfect time to bring it back as you select flowers that send the exact right message to the moms you know.
Here are some flowers you can easily find at grocery stores or florists and their associated meanings:
Pink Carnations are often considered to be the emblem of Mother’s Day, as they express gratitude and mother’s love.
- Alstromeria – Aspiring
- Camellia – Graciousness
- Pink Carnation – Gratitude, A Mother’s Love
- Gladiolus – Strength of Character
- Calla Lily – Regal
- Sunflower – Adoration
- Pink Tulip – Caring
- Dahlia – Elegance and dignity
- Pink Rose – Grace
- Jasmine – You are cheerful or graceful
- Cattleya Orchid – Mature Charms, Refined Beauty
- Lily – Beauty, Elegance
There are just a few of the hundreds of flowers that Victorians assigned meanings to - click here to see a much longer list to help you when you choose flowers this weekend. Are you familiar with the language of flowers? Can you recommend other flowers our readers may want to give the mothers in their lives this weekend? Drop us a comment below!

Dartbeat » This Mother's Day, Give Her (Plastic) Flowers
May 12th, 2012
via 800florals.com
Show your mom you care this year by giving her a little … plastic? That’s what geography professor Susanne Freidberg seems to be advocating, according to the New Hampshire Sunday News.
On an airing of American Public Media’s “Marketplace” radio program last week, Friedberg said she supported the unconventional suggestion from “Freakonomics” author Stephen Dubner to give plastic flowers instead of real ones as a Mother’s Day gift.
Giving plastic flowers will reduce one’s carbon footprint because real flowers are often flown to the states from “equatorial countries” and then delivered across the country, according to Dubner.
Freidberg said there are could be great environmental merits of buying plastic flowers instead.
“Because they’re so lightweight, they wouldn’t need to be flown anywhere; they wouldn’t decompose and produce greenhouse gases in any landfill; there’s the endless lifespan, so the possibilities for re-gifting them,” she told the Sunday News.
However, Freidberg also acknowledged that plastic flowers have their own environmental costs because they are usually manufactured overseas. In fact, calculating the environmental impact of any individual product is quite complicated, she said.
So what’s the verdict on this Mother’s Day dilemma? Should we wait before making that last-minute express order to home from 1-800-FLOWERS?
But, for mom, Freidberg said to get the real deal!
“We can spend a whole lot of time and mental energy worrying about carbon footprint … but oftentimes those differences may be trivial compared to the larger lifestyle,” she said in the article. “For these little once-a-year displays of love, Mom comes first. I would never give plastic flowers to my mom.”

Tea Parties Served With Cups of Flowers | Flower Factor
May 12th, 2012
Teacup with pink roses, stock, ivy geranium, kalanchoe, variegated ivy and Martha Washington geraniums.
Spring, friends, flowers, yummy treats, and sipping a master brewed cup of tea… sounds lovely. Have you been invited to a tea or have you thought of hosting one? The Tea Party trend is becoming popular with women who seek an informal way to get together in an atmosphere that is casual, and special, at the same time.
The hectic pace of life has become the norm, and many seek refuge where time can be spent at a slower pace. Invite a friend to have a cup of tea at your kitchen table, make some simple sandwiches or nibble on special cookies from the new bakery down the street. Just taking time for you and special friends balance to life.
As a floral designer I have been asked to create floral designs for tea parties many times. It is fun to work with the clients and hear the history of special teacups they are using. Sometimes the cups belonged to a beloved aunt or grandmother, and sometimes they were a great find at an antique store. History of the cups along with their decorations holds clues when choosing which flowers to use for the teacup floral design. Look at the cup and notice the colors used to decorate it. Is there a motif or pattern such as fruit, shells, or a particular flower? I use these clues when selecting flowers for the design.
If you enjoy arranging flowers, and would like to try one of these designs yourself, here are easy teacup design instructions:
- Choose a pretty teacup with a matching saucer
- Take notice of the colors and patterns in the cup
- Fill the cup ½ way with a solution of water and floral food (mix according to package directions brands vary)
- Begin the design by cutting flowers one at a time and placing them in the cup so they extend just over the rim
- With each flower added, a grid is created by the crossed stems
- When the rim is covered with a ring of flowers start a second row where the flowers are a little more upright
- Finish by placing the last flowers in the top of the design to fill any holes
- Accent the flowers with a couple stems of ivy
- Place the teacup on a saucer and enjoy the flowers with your tea
Here are some ideas to get you started:
This Teacup was one of my grandmothers. It was made in “occupied” Japan in the 1940’s. It is hand painted and I just love the color! Simply filled with alstroemeria blossoms, it is a perfect accompaniment to a nice cup of jasmine tea.
This one is a demitasse cup with a small violet planted into it. These make great favors.
If you are planning a shower, or a larger party at work, your local florist can create these delightful teacup arrangements too.
Tell us about your tea party.

Show Love and Affection With Flowers | Gardening Resources
May 7th, 2012What can be more romantic than sending a single red rose stem or a floral bouquet to someone you love on Valentine’s Day to show love and affection?
The tradition of sending flowers on Valentine’s Day dates back many, many years. St Valentine is depicted as being the saint of lovers. February 14th is the day dedicated to this Saint in the United Kingdom, America and many European countries.
The Victorians used Valentine’s Day and the sending of flowers as a coded ‘message’ to lovers or those to whom they were attracted. The surprise and intrigue for Victorian women was to try and decipher the code and who sent the flowers; those who thought they were admired and failed to receive a Valentine’s Day gift of flowers would become distraught and despaired! This tradition lives on for millions people-they eagerly await a delivery of flowers only to be desperately disappointed if there wishes are not brought to fruition. Wives, husbands, partners and lovers feel neglected and rejected if they do not receive a Valentine’s gift on February 14th.
The ease of ordering flowers and gifts for Valentine’ Day online provides little in the way of excuses for those who forget! A bunch of flowers grabbed from the supermarket or petrol station on the way home has no comparison with those which are brought from a florists for many women and men. Careful and thoughtful flowers arranged and presented by skilled florists are the only acceptable type of Valentine’s flowers in many people’s eyes!
Florists will deliver flowers to any type of destination within the UK-whether it be to a home address or workplace. One great advantage of using online ordering is the availability of adding other gifts to the order-chocolates in delightful heart-shaped boxes, helium balloons declaring love, a bottle of heady red or fruity white wine or a soft and cuddly teddy bear added to the Valentine’s gift will be greatly received without doubt, showing that the sender has gone that little bit further to impress and please their lover. Gifts other than flowers are ideal for those who suffer from allergies to pollens which can be sent by florists to provide the same impressive impact.
Flamboyant bouquets, the bigger the better, are becoming popular ways to show affection and admiration, especially when delivered to workplaces. Large bouquets containing the same flower type, typically red roses, will provide a very ‘showy’ and ostentatious declaration of love and affection for all to admire.
Although traditionally it is men who send flowers to their show their love and affection, more and more women are choosing to send flowers to men on Valentine’s Day. There are many different flowers, as well as red roses are being selected by women. The saucy anthuriums, with its heart-shaped crimson flower and large creamy beacon send a message which does not leave much to the imagination as to the sender’s intentions!
Valentine’s Day Flowers delivered anonymously will add to the intrigue and magic on this one day of the year dedicated to lovers young and old- a great way to show someone you really love and care for them.

Environmentally Friendly Robots Will Feed the Flowers They Trample …
May 2nd, 2012Dr Jonathan Rossiter, a senior lecturer at the University of Bristol‘s Department of Engineering and Mathematics, has snagged a two-year research grant of over £200,000 to develop robots that decompose once their mission if complete. This means instead of our automaton friends rusting away, devoid of purpose, they could return gracefully (and more importantly non-toxically) back to mother earth. Not only would this be a boon to the environment, but scientists would no longer need to track and retrieve their mechanical progeny once it reached the end of its usable life, further sparing resources and allowing mass deployment. At least we know, when the day comes, the planet won’t be harmed.
